The auto industry has gone green with the threat of global warming continually increasing. Automakers have started developing and manufacturing green vehicles or automobiles designed to have limited greenhouse gas emission. General Motors is one of those automakers pushing through with their promise of introducing eco-friendly vehicles in the auto market.
Recently, The Auto Channel reported that the Chevy Equinox, another green vehicle being developed by the Detroit automaker received the Green Car Vision Award from Green Car Journal. This is the first time that the said award was given. The Chevrolet Equinox was named for the award at the ongoing Washington Auto Show.
The Chevy Equinox beat four other nominees for the award. These are the BMW Hydrogen 7, the Honda FCX Clarity, the Phoenix Electric SUT, and the Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid. These four vehicles and the Chevrolet Equinox are classified as advanced limited production vehicles.
Ron Cogan, the editor and publisher of the Green Car Journal, said that the Chevrolet Equinox is the best vehicle out of the five to show the way forward in making the industry greener. "The Equinox Fuel Cell is visionary on many levels," said Cogan. "Zero-emission vehicles destined for our highways in the years ahead will take many forms, from small car platforms to large. Powering a popular crossover model with a future fuel such as hydrogen, and doing so seamlessly with an efficient powerplant that creates no CO2 greenhouse gases, is exemplary and Chevrolet should be commended for this."
The Chevrolet Equinox got the award thanks to its highly advanced powertrain. The said vehicle is powered by a hydrogen fuel cell. This powertrain is complemented with features which consumers in the future will be seeing as standard features like StabiliTrac and OnStar. Apart from those features, the Equinox is also equipped with front and roof rail side impact airbags designed to protect the occupants of the vehicle in the unfortunate event of a crash.
The Equinox also caught the attention of the panel of judges by the fact that it is already being offered to fleets and customers to try it out. Over 100 units of the Chevrolet Equinox Fuel Cell will be made available to consumers in California, New York City, and Washington D.C. for three months.

Honda Motor Co. announced recently the increase in sales of its CR-V sport utility vehicle. Alongside the rise in sales is the surge in demand. And Honda is poised to meet customer demands by building more CR-Vs.
Last year, the CR-V overtook Ford Motor Co.’s Explorer as America’s best-selling sport utility on sales increase of approximately 29 percent.
In 2007, the second largest Japanese automaker sold over 219,000 CR-Vs. Sales for the Explorer, meanwhile, dropped 23 percent to just under 138,000 units. The decline is attributed to the dive in sales of traditional sport utilities which customers in the U.S. have shunned in favor of crossovers.
According to Reuters, the automaker is targeting overall U.S. sales growth of 2.5 percent this year even as industry-wide sales of cars and light trucks in the U.S. market decline for a third consecutive year. "Most probably CR-V should be in line with that," said Tetsuo Iwamura chief of Honda's North American operations.
"There is lots of room for the CR-V to grow," Iwamura said at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. He added the Japanese automaker would free up more American production capacity for the said sport utility. This will be done after Honda shifts production of its Civic sedan from its East Liberty, Ohio, plant to an Indiana plant, which is still under construction.
Iwamura suggested that Honda had room to support sales if needed by adding targeted incentives on the CR-V, which he said was gaining ground because of a desire by U.S. consumers to "downsize" their vehicle choices. "Right now we are selling with no incentives. Zero," added Iwamura.
The sales projections of the automaker could put it on track to yield over 10 percent market share in America. If that happens, Honda will be crowned the second import brand after another Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corp.
Experts say the weak link of Honda is its Acura luxury brand. Sales of Acura in the U.S. plummeted almost 11 percent in the previous year. Iwamura said Honda expected that revamped version of its TL and TSX sedans would allow Acura to recover back to its 2006 sales level of 201,000 units this year. For 2009, Honda is readying a clean-diesel Acura model and in future years will expand the line-up of the luxury brand to take it into segments where it has not yet competed, he added.

Japanese automaker Mazda announced recently that they would be unveiling a three-door hatchback version of the very popular Mazda2 later this year. According to the company's newsletter, they will be adding the three-door hatchback for the first time in their offered lineup of the Mazda2.
According to Mazda, the Mazda2 three-door hatchback has the same attributes as the five-door hatchback which has become very popular among car enthusiasts. Furthermore, the three-door hatchback was made to look sportier and to handle better. Apart from those attributes, the three-door Mazda2 will also be priced much lower than the five-door Mazda2 variant.
One of the biggest events of its kind, the 78th Geneva International Auto Show, will be where the Japanese automaker will unveil the new variant of the Mazda2. The said motor show will be held from March 4 until March 16 this year. The said event is expected to draw a lot of attention and the new Mazda2 variant is expected to be a show stealer.
Mazda has been known to be focusing on the very stable European auto market. Thus, the Mazda2 variant which they will unveil at the Geneva International Auto Show has been designed to suit the taste of European auto buyers. The automaker gave three available engines for the three-door hatchback. The first one is a 1.3-liter gasoline engine and the second is a slightly bigger 1.5 liter gas engine. The third engine option is the same MZ-CD 1.4-liter common rail turbo diesel found on the five-door hatchback.
True to the automaker's fight against climate change, the three engines have been designed to produce very little greenhouse gas. This is achieved while not sacrificing the performance that consumers have expected from the Japanese automaker.
To date, the Mazda2 has already received much praise and awards. According to the company's newsletter, the Mazda2 has received awards from different countries. "Launched in September 2007 as Mazda's first new-generation Zoom-Zoom vehicle to evolve to the next level, the new Mazda2 was an immediate hit with European customers," reads the company's newsletter.
"In December 2007, it was awarded five stars for adult occupant protection on Euro-NCAP crash testing and has won more than 20 automotive awards. These include Car of the Year awards in Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Denmark, Greece and New Zealand, along with the Japan RJC Car of the Year."
The Japanese automaker is sure to attract more consumers into their dealerships across Europe. The new three-door hatchback variant of the Mazda2 is equipped with auto reliable components which have been designed and manufactured along with Mazda Tribute parts.

Drivers should understand that in many states if you are pulled over by the authorities and found to be without car insurance you run the risk of having your vehicle impounded on the spot. In some states it is literally illegal for the police to allow you to continue driving once they know you do not have the proper automobile insurance.
In addition to having your vehicle impounded you may also find yourself being charged heavy fees and fines by the courts. Of course, in addition to all these troubles, you may have your driver's license suspended or revoked for a certain amount of time.
Car insurance protects you from personal liability should you be in an accident. Aside from the legal requirements, this is the main reason you want car insurance. If you are in an accident and you are at fault you can be held personally responsible for the costs of medical bills if a person is injured and major monetary awards if a person is killed. These costs can all but ruin most families.
It can mean selling your home, selling your stocks and bonds, or selling other assets in order to pay the costs. Pickups, for years, have been the best-selling vehicle in the United States. But recently released year-to-date sales are showing that overall, pickup truck sales have fallen this year. Sales for the Nissan Titan have dropped more than 9% this year. In September of 2006, more than 6,000 Titans were sold. This past September, sales barely beat the 5,000 mark. Chevrolet's Colorado and Ford's Ranger are faring far worse. Sales for the Ford Ranger are down more than 20% over this time last year. September sales for this year are down by 43% compared to 2006. Chevy's Colorado is down more than 18% in overall sales for the year and even sales for the popular Chevy Silverado are down nearly 2%. Nissan's suffering as well with an 18% drop YTD (year-to-date) with the Frontier, and GMC's Sierra is barely holding on to market share with a 1.6% drop in sales over last year. This can be alarming for some people looking for a car, van, or SUV but most buyers agree that the risk far outweighs the reward.On the flip side, Dodge's Ram is holding steady--actually up one percent over last year and has sold more than 500 more Rams in September '07 than it sold in September 2006. Toyota's also doing well. Even though sales for the Tacoma were down by almost 3,000 vehicles this past September compared to the September prior, year-to-date sales of the pickup are up by 1.2%. Tacoma's sleek older brother the Tundra is doing exceptionally well, up more than 50% over last year.So why are the sales of certain companies on the decline while others are holding steady or shooting toward the stars? It could have to do with the minor improvements made in safety features to last year's pickups. Since safety has shown in multiple studies to be a "very important consideration" among consumers of automotive vehicles-- and to those who bought pickup trucks specifically-- companies that have upgraded safety equipment seem to be garnering favor.Isuzu is one of these companies. Japanese automakers have been known for their reliable vehicles which have become the favorite of most consumers. This can be clearly seen in the United States auto market where market share of Japanese automakers continue to increase while the Big Three's decline. This trend is not only seen in the United States though as according to J.D. Power and Associates, Honda and Toyota dominated the 2007 South Africa Customer Satisfaction Index.
According to The Auto Channel's report, the two Japanese automakers received top ranks more than any other automaker. For Honda, the Civic, CR-V, FR-V, and the Jazz topped their respective segments. For Toyota, the Avensis, Hilux, the Land Cruiser Prado and the Tazz received the highest rating in their classes. The Customer Satisfaction Index is a study conducted by J.D. Power and Associates to gauge the level of satisfaction of customers regarding the vehicles that they have purchased.
According to The Auto Channel, J.D. Power and Associates, the study focuses on the first 10 to 21 months of ownership. Four factors covering 77 attributes are taken into consideration to gauge the satisfaction of customers. Of the four factors, the highest weight was given to the quality and reliability of vehicles which is given a weight of 32 percent. Aesthetics is second with a weight of 29 percent. Satisfaction of customers is also based on their experiences on the dealership which is given 19 percent. Last but not least is the cost of ownership which corresponds to 20 percent.

"The consistent improvement in overall satisfaction in the South Africa market is good news for consumers, franchised dealers and manufacturers," continued Walters. "However, there is still significant room for improvement. Audi AG, the German luxury automaker, as it inks a decade TT sports car production, hit another milestone in the auto industry by unveiling the performance-focused version dubbed the TTS. The TTS made its official debut last Sunday at the North American International Auto Show.
The TTS, which is available in both four-seat coupe and two-seat roadster convertible, is equipped with a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine that generates 272 hp and a governor-limited top speed of about 155 mph, divulged MLive. The engine produces nearly as much power as a 3.2-liter, six-cylinder engine, but with better fuel efficiency, it added.
To keep weight well distributed and under control - at a curb weight of just 3075 pounds - steel construction is used by the automaker’s engineers at the back end of the TTS. Additionally, aluminum is used in the front and center sections as well as the front suspension.
The use of lightweight aluminum and steel hybrid body shell kept the supercar grounded by a tailored chassis featuring four-wheel drive. Also, the TTS took advantage of the enlarged brakes and upgraded power steering to manage extra power. It will be recognizable by 'S' insignia, as well as new bi-xenon headlamps, larger front air intakes and deeper side-skirts and arches to house 18-inch alloy-wheels, Reuters noted.

The front axle often ranges from 14,000 to 16,000 pounds, with a rear axle typically ranging from 23,000 to 26,000 pounds. “They might go all the way up to a 30,000-pound rear axle,†Bees said. “We can do this making a very, very good home fuel oil truck, but it’s on the high end of the cost spectrum.â€
Other original equipment manufacturers (OEM) that make trucks that can be designed for fuel oil delivery to the priority of maneuverability have listened to the fuel oil distributors’ needs. Freightliner, for example, said its Business Class M2 106 features up to a 55-degree wheel cut, achieved through a combination of a setback front axle and a swept-back bumper. They also offer to complement the wheel-cut, a 2,500-square-inch windshield, low-profile dash and an aerodynamic sloped hood â€" features that combine for visibility, which are crucial in the negotiating of tight spots. Wide door openings, low step-in heights and interior and exterior grab handles on the M2 are designed to help reduce fatigue, and offer easy entry and exit for drivers who make numerous fuel oil deliveries daily. 

 Hino Motors Sales USA in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan offers a Hino Model 338 Class 7 straight truck with a 260 HP engine, optional in-cab controlled rear locking differentials and optional vertical exhaust. This truck also has an air suspension. The straight truck features an exceptional turning radius because of its 55-degree wheel cut and wide visibility for ease of movement during fuel oil deliveries, even to homes where access is cramped. Bob Lutz GM's 72-year-old Vice Chairman sits on the cutting edge of new hybrid technology. It is in fact Mr. Lutz and his belief in hybrid technology that has led Chevrolet to create some interesting new hybrid models due out soon including the Silverado, Tahoe, Malibu and Equinox. Under Mr. Lutz's guidance, Chevrolet even produced a fleet of transit buses powered by their Allison Electric Drive Transmission system for King County, Washington. A fleet is expected to save King County over 750,000 gallons of gasoline a year over the non hybrids it replaced according to hybrid-car.org.Perhaps more important than any of the strides forward to date will be the 2010 launch of a brand new hybrid on its very own platform. We are of course talking about the 2010 Chevy Volt, part sports car, part green machine, all fun.Officially unveiled at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) on January 7, 2007 in Detroit, Michigan, the new Volt represents one of the first hybrid coupes to market. It was designed to meet the needs of most everyday commuters by providing electric power for up to 40 miles based off of its battery charge. In between the hybrid power and the internal combustion engines, the Volt is said to be able to travel 640 miles on a full charge. Perhaps most importantly, the Volt has been designed with the everyday user in mind.With a price point around $30-40k, the Volt can fit the budgets of most middle class families looking to break the mold. Plus, based on a secret source, Bloomberg revealed in August '07 that first year production will yield 60,000 Volts. That number is nearly triple the amount of Prius that were made available to consumer post launch. A move that led to waiting lists, purchases over sticker price and a variety of other hype on Toyota's behalf.One of the other reasons the Volt represents a large step forward for American automakers is the unique E-Flex system. This new platform from Chevy will ultimately allow for deployment across a variety of Chevy hybrids in the future and lies at the core of its success. The design combines a small electric motor with a lithium ion battery for the electric component while the gas engines is based on a small 1 liter engine to do the work at higher speeds. The combined package creates an engine with a peak output of 160 horsepower. Dearborn automaker Ford is in the middle of implementing its turnaround plan. With market shares constantly decreasing, the automaker needs to find a way to get back into the race in the auto industry. Although the United States auto market is the most important auto market today, Ford is not neglecting its operations outside the country.Recently, The Auto Channel reported that the automaker has earmarked $500 million to expand its presence in the exponentially growing Indian auto market. This announcement by the company reaffirms its commitment to growth in the said Asian country. One of the areas that Ford is focusing on is the increased output of their auto assembly plant in India. Part of the budget for their Indian operation expansion will go to the expansion of their Chennai auto assembly plant.John Parker, the company’s executive vice president for Asia Pacific and Africa, had this to say according to The Auto Channel: "This new investment highlights the significance of India's role in our continued expansion and overall strategy for the Asia Pacific and Africa region. We've developed a long-term and strategic plan for India that's anchored on a substantial product program and new engine manufacturing facility."The automaker has already started their expansion of Indian operation. The said mission is expected to take three years but in that tome frame, Ford will be reaping the benefits of the changes that they will make in India. The first phase of the mission is to create a diesel engine assembly plant in Chennai. With the increased demand for diesel engines both in India and in the United States, Ford is making sure that they will be in a position to provide consumers with what they are looking for.Apart from that, the earmarked budget will also be allocated for the development of a low-cost car. Although the Indian auto market is growing, Indian car buyers are still looking for low-priced vehicles. With the automaker allocating budget for that endeavor, they are in place to mass produce small and low-cost vehicles for the Indian auto market.Arvind Mathew, president and managing director of Ford India, said: "Ford India's small car will be a worthy addition to the already successful and robust product mix that we offer to Indian consumers, and will further strengthen our competitive position in this increasingly dynamic market.""Our investment plan clearly signals Ford's intent to implement an aggressive and comprehensive growth strategy for the India market. Reaching volume production of vehicles and engines will not only allow us to participate in the future growth of India's auto industry, but really to help drive it, both in terms of domestic sale and export potential," added Matthew. The automaker is sure to manufacture more vehicles and auto parts as reliable as Acura body parts.
