China Favors Hybrids Over Diesels : New Hybrid car review 2008

In the auto industry where green vehicles are becoming more and more popular, automakers are now developing vehicles which produce very little amounts of greenhouse gases. Japanese automakers are known for their hybrid cars such as the Prius which is manufactured by Toyota. On the other hand, European automakers are focusing on the development of clean diesel engines.In China though, the government has recently announced that diesel engines will no longer receive preferential policies. That is according to an official from the national Development and Reform Commission in China.Yang Yongxin, an official from the Industry Policy Department of NDRC, told China Business News: "With all things considered, we've decided to remove diesel engine powered sedans from the catalogue." Although the said move was done, it does not mean that the country is no longer doing its share in the move towards a greener auto industry. China will be encouraging the development of gas electric hybrid vehicles.Apart from electric powered vehicles, the Chinese government will also be encouraging automakers to develop vehicles which can run on alternative fuels such as compressed natural gas, and hydrogen. Hydrogen powered vehicles are already being developed by several automakers and it is the alternative fuel considered by many to be the best possible solution to the problem of greenhouse gas emissions. Vehicles using hydrogen as fuel produces only water as its byproduct which means that using the said fuel will dramatically reduce the amount of greenhouse gases being released into the atmosphere. With the Chinese government exerting effort towards the development of green vehicles, it can be expected that said country will soon have more hybrid and other green vehicles.The changes made in the legislation also show that the Chinese government favors hybrid vehicles over diesel vehicles. The Auto Channel also reported that the Chinese government is also worried about the supply of diesel. Li Shiulin, an expert with the NDRC, said: "Diesel engine sedan is still in the testing stage, not in maturity yet. We're not certain about the direction of diesel engine sedan. And we're also concerned with the supply of diesel fuels."Feng Fei, the director of the Economic Development Department of National Development Research Center, a government think-tank affiliated to China's central government, added: "If 30 percent of China's all vehicles in use were powered by diesel engines, the country could save up to 28.30 million tons of oil a year."What this means is that China is making great steps forward in the promotion of green automotive technologies which can be found on some Acura coil spring -equipped vehicles today.
