The engineers at Volvo are no strangers to cutting edge safety systems. In 2006 the Volvo S80 could be outfitted with Collision Warning and Brake Support alerts. The systems sent visible and audible cues to the driver when the gap between his car and the one ahead tightened up too rapidly. In addition to the warnings, the brakes were prepped for use, but the driver's foot still had to do the work. Now, the Volvo XC60 crossover, set to go on sale in Europe this summer and coming to the United States in 2009, will be outfitted with City Safety, technology that will not only monitor the gap between cars and prep the brakes, but if necessary, do the braking itself.Using an optical radar system built in to the windshield at the same level as the rear view mirror, City Safety monitors ahead of the car to a distance of approximately 20 feet (six meters). Intended for low-speed, bumper-to-bumper driving at rates of under 20 mph, the radar will pre-charge the brakes when the gap begins to get tight so the driver can respond more effectively. If, however, a collision is imminent, City Safety uses a hydraulic pump to activate the brakes on its own.The unit's algorithm runs fifty calculations per second, constantly determining the necessary braking speed to prevent a collision, factoring in both the car's speed and the distance to the car ahead of its position in the lane. When the calculated force needed to brake exceeds a pre-determined level and the driver has not physically responded by tapping the brakes, City Safety concludes that a collision is imminent and intervenes. The system will work during the day and at night, but can be limited by weather conditions including fog, mist, heavy rain, or snow. Sensors in the windshield will alert the driver if dirt has built-up to a level that will compromise the unit's ability to scan the road ahead.Statistics compiled by Volvo indicate that more than 75% of reported collisions actually occur when the vehicles involves are moving at speeds of less than 20 mph. The company's engineers optimistically predict that the City Safety system has the potential to reduce such low-speed collisions by as much as 50%. Although the units will be standard on the XC60 crossover, Volvo has not announced a decision on inclusion with other models or if City Safety will be offered as a standard feature or an available option when it does proliferate to those models.The XC60, which will be built at the company's assembly facility in Ghent, Belgium, is being described by Volvo as the safest car it has ever built. The City Safety system joins a growing body of collision detection and prevention units being incorporated into 21st century vehicles, most geared toward blind spot monitoring and enhancing the driver's view and perception of the space around the car. American Honda Motor Co. Inc. now releases the details, features, and the manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) of the 2008 model year Sedan and Coupe variants of the Honda Accord. Both model variants are available with several trim level options with exclusive features for each trim level. The 2008 Honda Accord Sedan will roll out in Honda dealers all over the U.S. starting this September 12, while the 2008 Honda Accord Coupe will go on sale in September 20th. In a recent press release, Dick Colliver, executive vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. commented: "The 2008 Honda Accord adds popular features and enhancements while maintaining competitive, value-oriented pricing on every model. Wonder where you can find the cars of the future? They are at the 40th Tokyo Motor Show. At this year's motor show, automakers embraced the wacky, weird and gorgeous futuristic cars. Nissan Motor Co. introduced the egg-shaped Pivo 2, which can turn its wheels sideways to slot into a parking space. Inside the car is a "robotic agent" that recognizes that recognizes the driver's face, senses his mood and speak to him. Honda Motor Co. flaunted the Puyo which features a gel-filled, squashable body covering as well as ludicrously small wheels at each corner. The "silky feel" interior is similarly flexible, with controls increasing through the stretching membrane when the fuel-cell Puyo starts up.Toyota Motor Corp., not wanting to be upstaged, showcased the RiN that is said to encourage drivers to "to re-evaluate themselves and... to turn their attention to society and nature, producing a healthy rhythm for both mind and body".One of the stunners at the motor show was the Audi Metro Project quattro. This car has more normal proportions than the lightweight A2, which was a car before its time, and with its giant, mesh-filled front grille and shapely roofline. It is quite the sporty coupe but it is a Quattro as well. But not as aficionados know it. The 1.4-litre engine is borrowed from the Volkswagen Golf and has 150 base horsepower, but there is also a 41 base horsepower electric motor. So it is a hybrid, and CO2 emissions are calculated at an average 112g/km by the EC official test method.The crush around the Audi was almost frightening; the crush around the Nissan GT-R was even greater, but then this is the latest incarnation of Japan's most cult-sustaining supercar, said John Simister of The Independent. This version has a 480bhp, twin-turbo, 3.8-litre V6 and is designed to be able to maintain more than 180mph, whatever the outside temperature may be.Mitsubishi Motor Corp. presented an electric coup? version of the i-car dubbed as the MiEV and Concept ZT, a ruggedly handsome wagon which is destined for production as a new Sigma. It flaunts a "clean" diesel engine, showing that the previously diesel-hating Japanese car market is slowly recognizing the diesel engine's advantages, provided it does not pollute.Mazda Motor Corp.'s Taiki joined the three other concept cars in the company's Nagare - it means "embodiment of movement" series. The Camry offers roomy and comfortable interiors, powerful V-6 engine, luxurious ride quality and advanced safety equipment. However, Toyota has dropped the CE name from the base trim level for the 2008 Camry version. The four-door sedan is available in four trim levels, the base, LE, SE and XLE. The base is equipped with a standard 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 158-horsepower. This week I was driving through whimsical countryside, with the leaves sweeping past my windscreen just as the road did the same and all was right with the world. Suddenly a shadow was cast over my beloved car and as I dared peak into my rear-view mirror I asked myself “What’s that coming over the hill?†It was indeed a monster, in the form of a Chelsea tractor, piloted by none other than a life sized Barbie that was just a plastic. As she applied her makeup â€" presumably for Ken, the thought of driving seemed like an added bonus, the hand stitched hide of what appeared to be a white tiger lavished over the empty child seat next her. And then she was gone.This got me thinking. Barbie is your typical 4x4/SUV driver aka the school run mum that sees driving over a pebble as going off road. Well I hear you 4x4ers cry: “we’re not all like thatâ€. I do believe there are those of you out of there that do need off-roaders and there is a simple way to show yourselves â€" buy a Jeep Wrangler. Oh yes, by purchasing Chrysler/Jeep’s Wrangler, you say to every other wannabe off-roader that you are the real deal and the school run is a thing of the past â€" unless the school is atop Everest.Heritage is a key component to standing out from the crowd and the Jeep Wrangler has it in spades. So what heritage then - motor racing? No. Italian flair? No. Helping protect the world from evil? Um, yes actually.Produced by Chrysler and marketed under the ‘Jeep’ moniker, the Wrangler is derived from the CJ (Civilian Jeep) the go anywhere, do anything utility vehicle made famous throughout World War II, as it helped allied troops immeasurably against German invaders. Launched in 1987, the first generation Wrangler featured four wheels (five if you count the steering wheel), a drop top, large ground clearance and a roll cage. I’m really not skimping on detail, that was about it. Put simply, the reason why the civilian production version was as-near-as-makes-no-difference the same as the army’s’ version was because, like the military version it was designed to go off road and off road alone.Perhaps in a misguided move, Jeep launched the Schwarzenegger sounding ‘Renegade’ derivative of the Wrangler in 1991. However the company miss-read it’s key demographic and offered it’s hardcore, off road customer base ‘luxuries’ such as floor mats (front only), a locking glove box, engine lights and cup holders. If these features didn’t alienate their customers with uselessness, the extra $7,000 (£3,500) price tag did. The Renegade sold poorly and was decommissioned in 1994, a year before the standard model gave way to it’s younger brother â€" the generation two Wrangler.A key change was Jeep making the new Wrangler available in right hand drive as the company sought to expand its global market. Style wise, it paid heavy homage to its World War II compatriot, with circular headlights a welcome return from the much maligned square monstrosities on the Mk1. The new Jeep also featured a relatively civilised coil spring suspension â€" if civilised is Mike Tyson biting your ear off. Admittedly, the Wrangler was more manageable on the tarmac but wisely, Jeep didn’t compromise it’s off road performance. A few additions such as a radio and the updating of the interior design were also welcomed, without softening the Jeep too much.On the back of the successful Mk2, the current generation three offering was launched merely months ago and has been criticised for being too large compared to the military hero it is derived from. Personally I think the Wrangler has grown up and is now a true contender to the likes of Range Rover, the BMW X5 and Porsche Cayenne. To help with this, anti-lock brakes make an appearance 20 years too late, traction control appears seven years too late and Jeep are about on par with introducing Satellite Navigation. Ok, so the Wrangler may not be as good to drive on the road as an X5 or Cayenne, but its ultra reliable (the US postal service uses them extensively) and it’ll still do the ugly off-road stuff with a grin on its face, whilst the Porsche struggles with a broken nail. Plus it’s about $10000000000000000 (£100000000) cheaper.The latest edition is also available for military use â€" complete with a snorkel so the engine can breathe underwater (seriously). Jeep then have not watered down the Wrangler but with a slight measure of creature comforts it’s a serious contender for the best 4x4 you can buy.I’ve seen the latest Barbie motoring range - Ken’s cramped and his hair is blown around. She’s been beaten and she’s back in the sports car.

The facelifted BT-50 maintains its sporty appeal, with the new design adding a more dynamic and robust look.There is a new front pentagonal grille, along with new front bumpers, multi-reflector headlights and turning lights. Meanwhile, the rear lights are larger and come with chrome trim. The side profile is highlighted by a new wheel fender kit, as well as 15-inch or 16-inch 5-spoke wheels. There are 11 colours to choose from as well.Mazda Sales Thailand Co Ltd marketing director Sureethip La-ongthong says that the company will focus on two-wheel-drive pickup models this year. As much as 97 per cent of Mazda pickup truck sales are made up of two-wheel-drive models, while the remaining 3 per cent are four-wheel-drive models for fleet customers."Previously the ratio between two- and four-wheel-drive models was 85/15, but presently the popularity of thr four-wheel-drive models have grown," she daid.Sureethip said the company will emphasize on the 4x2 2.5-liter and 3.0-liter models, with prices starting at Bt489,000 foi the standard cab and Bt541,000 for the Freestyle cab. The magic number is 35 mpg, and automakers have 13 years to get there. Now the question is: How?Meeting that benchmark will require developing new technology, investing billions in new manufacturing and shunning the "bigger is better" mentality that has guided the auto industry for 20 years. It will be an unprecedented challenge and a seismic change for an industry that has never had much interest in either."This is the automotive equivalent of the moon shot," Ron Cogan, the editor and publisher of Green Car Journal and GreenCar.com, told us. "They know they have to reach these goals. They know it won't be easy. They'll have to marshal all of their resources, and those of their suppliers, to do this."A recent study by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology found automakers could double fuel economy relatively easily by emphasizing lighter - though not necessarily smaller - cars with more efficient gasoline, diesel and hybrid drivetrains. And that, industry experts told us, is pretty much what the industry will do.Just 58 of the 1,199 vehicle models listed in the Environmental Protection Agency's 2008 Fuel Economy Guide eight of the 2007 models get a combined city and highway fuel efficiency of 35 mpg or better, and they're not all subcompacts or small hybrids like the Toyota Prius. The current average is 26.4 mpg, so clearly there's a long way to go if automakers are to reach an average of 35 mpg for their entire fleets, as the law requires - especially for Detroit, which has spent the past two decades focusing most of its attention on SUVs and pickups.Industry experts said the first changes will be relatively subtle, relatively cheap and relatively soon. They'll include improved aerodynamics, six-speed automatic automatic transmissions and dual-clutch manual transmissions. Engine-driven components like power steering pumps will give way to electric ones. More efficient gearing and tires with lower rolling resistance will bring still more improvements. The cumulative effect can be significant. Ford says these tactics boosted the fuel efficiency of the V-6 Taurus by 10 percent. The 2008 Taurus has a combined city/highway fuel economy of 22 mpg.Subcompacts are the fastest-growing segment of the market, but no one expects Detroit to dump SUVs in favor of microcars. Instead, automakers will use a lot more aluminum, magnesium and lightweight steel to reduce the weight of all their cars. Ford has said it will trim 250 to 750 pounds from every car in its lineup between 2012 and 2020.The most radical changes will come under the hood. Automakers will embrace direct injection -- a more efficient means of getting fuel into the combustion chamber -- in a big way and bring more diesel and hybrid drivetrains to market."We're looking at massive changes in engine technology," Aaron Bragman, an auto industry analyst with Global Insight, told us. "Two-thirds of the U.S. fleet will have to change to direct injection. One-third of the total market will be diesel, and half of those will be diesel-electric hybrids. Everyone is pursuing a strategy of smaller engines with direct injection and turbochargers."Each of the Big Three is investing billions of dollars in these efforts. Chrysler's new Phoenix V-6 engine shuts down three cylinders when less power is needed, improving fuel efficiency by 3 to 6 percent. The company recently opened three factories to begin producing the engines. Ford is developing four- and six-cylinder direct injection turbocharged engines it says burn 10 to 20 percent less gasoline without any loss in performance. The magic number is 35 mpg, and automakers have 13 years to get there. Now the question is: How?Meeting that benchmark will require developing new technology, investing billions in new manufacturing and shunning the "bigger is better" mentality that has guided the auto industry for 20 years. It will be an unprecedented challenge and a seismic change for an industry that has never had much interest in either."This is the automotive equivalent of the moon shot," Ron Cogan, the editor and publisher of Green Car Journal and GreenCar.com, told us. "They know they have to reach these goals. They know it won't be easy. They'll have to marshal all of their resources, and those of their suppliers, to do this."A recent study by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology found automakers could double fuel economy relatively easily by emphasizing lighter - though not necessarily smaller - cars with more efficient gasoline, diesel and hybrid drivetrains. And that, industry experts told us, is pretty much what the industry will do.Just 58 of the 1,199 vehicle models listed in the Environmental Protection Agency's 2008 Fuel Economy Guide eight of the 2007 models get a combined city and highway fuel efficiency of 35 mpg or better, and they're not all subcompacts or small hybrids like the Toyota Prius. The current average is 26.4 mpg, so clearly there's a long way to go if automakers are to reach an average of 35 mpg for their entire fleets, as the law requires - especially for Detroit, which has spent the past two decades focusing most of its attention on SUVs and pickups.Industry experts said the first changes will be relatively subtle, relatively cheap and relatively soon. They'll include improved aerodynamics, six-speed automatic automatic transmissions and dual-clutch manual transmissions. Engine-driven components like power steering pumps will give way to electric ones. More efficient gearing and tires with lower rolling resistance will bring still more improvements. The cumulative effect can be significant. Ford says these tactics boosted the fuel efficiency of the V-6 Taurus by 10 percent. The 2008 Taurus has a combined city/highway fuel economy of 22 mpg.Subcompacts are the fastest-growing segment of the market, but no one expects Detroit to dump SUVs in favor of microcars. Instead, automakers will use a lot more aluminum, magnesium and lightweight steel to reduce the weight of all their cars. Ford has said it will trim 250 to 750 pounds from every car in its lineup between 2012 and 2020.The most radical changes will come under the hood. Automakers will embrace direct injection -- a more efficient means of getting fuel into the combustion chamber -- in a big way and bring more diesel and hybrid drivetrains to market."We're looking at massive changes in engine technology," Aaron Bragman, an auto industry analyst with Global Insight, told us. "Two-thirds of the U.S. fleet will have to change to direct injection. One-third of the total market will be diesel, and half of those will be diesel-electric hybrids. Everyone is pursuing a strategy of smaller engines with direct injection and turbochargers."Each of the Big Three is investing billions of dollars in these efforts. Chrysler's new Phoenix V-6 engine shuts down three cylinders when less power is needed, improving fuel efficiency by 3 to 6 percent. It was an honor to attend a talk by Colonel Lawrence Wilkerson when he spoke at the Hammer Cultural Center on the Westside of Los Angeles last night. Colonel Wilkerson is is the highest ranking official who defected from the Bush Administration. Which, he confessed, he considers to be a personal embarressment and that he has no hesitancy in saying that he will have trouble living with as long as he lives More precisely that the man saw a lot of things that were not acceptable but stayed in the Administration for five years. The Colonel said so much that was true last nite. But it wasn't all true. He said that he believes that the switch over to more sensible fuel solutions would take at least seventy five years. He spoke of the need to change the whole industry, its infrastructure and on like that... and that we didn’t even have the technology yet. So, here you have a man with as much honesty and integrity and love of country as Colonel Wilkerson demonstrated who is yet on stage talking about these false statements about the future of alternative energy then perhaps it means that many people in power don’t know. Which means that the oil companies and other such "experts" have done their job in hiding the truth from the public. In reality it isn’t going to take seventy five years nor even one year. Because we already have it now. I suppose the infrastructure will just have to get used to having to maintaining pace with the people. Because there are now many collaborative members of Water4Gas scattered around the globe who are helping in their own unique ways for the common purpose of pushing this fantastic technology up as high as we can take it as rapidly as humanly possible. As of right now at a standard where pretty much anybody with technical skill or little can assemble and install the system and roll their car out for a drive with a gas/hydrogen hybrid car. So there are those who are actively working on creating the smoke screen and there are those who may have gotten blinded by it and some such are out there forwarding false information. You don’t have to join them! But you don't have to be either of those. You are welcome to join us, instead!

While most people cringe when filling up their car these days, I look at the silver lining and think it is a good thing. You may think I’m crazy but I have a reasonable explanation. Twenty years from now we will look back and realize that the high gas prices, while inconvenient at the time, helped create a movement. A movement that spurred innovation and helped create change in the biggest oil consuming nation in the world.Americans are getting fed up with the high gas prices, and this will increase the demand for fuel efficient cars, alternative forms of energy and the adoption of existing technologies like hybrid vehicles. Car manufacturers have been selling large fuel inefficient SUV’s for years now, and with good reason as that is what the public wanted. Now the public is starting to demand more fuel efficient cars and the manufacturers are starting to respond.High gas prices have already helped lead to a record increase in hybrid vehicle sales in 2007 and the trend will continue in 2008. I don’t know about you, but I can’t take my 15 minute drive to work without seeing at least five Prius’s, whereas one year ago I may see one at best. Currently hybrid adoption is at an all time high and many people are looking at purchasing a hybrid vehicle from a money saving standpoint. Sad as it is, many people may be forced into becoming more environmentally aware. Sure it’s a good thing, but it would be nice if people changed because of a choice made strictly in line with saving the planet rather than saving a few bucksToyota and Honda are currently at the forefront of the hybrid technology and have already invested billions of dollars developing the technology. Many manufacturers are trying to catch up to them and as a result companies like Nissan and Ford have licensed Toyota’s hybrid technology. In the mean time they will try to develop their own hybrid systems. They realized that they needed to get hybrid cars on the road as soon as possible because that is what the consumer is demanding. The fact that these companies would use their competitor’s hybrid technology shows that they realize the importance of creating these kinds of vehicles now.The other ripple effect of high gas prices are they help spur innovation. Alternative energy sources are currently be researched and developed into real world applications at a rapid pace. While many of these fuel sources have been known about for years, they were usually tabled at the concept stage because of cost and the consumer demand wasn’t there. Well now the demand is here and companies are scrambling to be the first to offer the next big technology such as hydrogen, diesel-hybrids, bio-diesel hybrids, and plug-in hybrids to name a few.We have been spoiled with reasonable gas prices for a long time and this was bound to happen eventually. The two most frequent vehicle accidents are getting hit while parked and rear end collision. For the rear end collision, approximately 75% of them are less than 10 miles per hour, 94% occur on straight roads and most are direct hits. The average claim is less than $1,500.
Just from the 5 mile per hour "rear into pole" crash tests done by the Insurance Institute For Highway Safety, the best rear bumper on a pickup truck sustained over $600 damage in 2004 (the last time the IIHS tested pickup trucks) and the worst sustained over $2,000 damage. SUV bumpers had even more damage in this walking speed accident with the worst sustaining over $4,000 damage.
You can see why bumper manufacturing companies and auto repair facilities are smiling. The average number of plastic bumpers being replaced each year is over 8 million with the average cost to repair a plastic bumper $450 and the average cost to replace one is $900. And what are they made of - thin metal, plastic, fiberglass and even foam - very flimsy stuff. Today, if you hit the bumper, you hit the car. And there are thousands of tailgaters, inattentive, distracted drivers, drivers with poor judgment and lousy-stinking parallel parkers out there just ready to wreck your vehicle.
In 2007 I did a live radio talk show interview on The Auto Channel about rear end collisions and one of the interviewers was an auto body repair guy. The host of the show asked this body shop guy: "are you interested in having people protect themselves? (from a rear end collision)" and his answer was; "not necessarily." And he continued on by adding; "For those of us in the body shop business, that's how we make our living." I didn't get real warm and fuzzy feelings from this guy at all. And I totally understood since I was introducing a product that would eliminate a lot of his business.
But, after having been in a rear end collision, all the hassle that it entailed, the amount of damage we sustained and the threat of my insurance going up, I decided to do something about it - and the auto body shops don't like at all. The two most frequent vehicle accidents are getting hit while parked and rear end collision. For the rear end collision, approximately 75% of them are less than 10 miles per hour, 94% occur on straight roads and most are direct hits. The average claim is less than $1,500.
Just from the 5 mile per hour "rear into pole" crash tests done by the Insurance Institute For Highway Safety, the best rear bumper on a pickup truck sustained over $600 damage in 2004 (the last time the IIHS tested pickup trucks) and the worst sustained over $2,000 damage. SUV bumpers had even more damage in this walking speed accident with the worst sustaining over $4,000 damage.
You can see why bumper manufacturing companies and auto repair facilities are smiling. The average number of plastic bumpers being replaced each year is over 8 million with the average cost to repair a plastic bumper $450 and the average cost to replace one is $900. And what are they made of - thin metal, plastic, fiberglass and even foam - very flimsy stuff. Today, if you hit the bumper, you hit the car. And there are thousands of tailgaters, inattentive, distracted drivers, drivers with poor judgment and lousy-stinking parallel parkers out there just ready to wreck your vehicle.
In 2007 I did a live radio talk show interview on The Auto Channel about rear end collisions and one of the interviewers was an auto body repair guy. The host of the show asked this body shop guy: "are you interested in having people protect themselves? (from a rear end collision)" and his answer was; "not necessarily." And he continued on by adding; "For those of us in the body shop business, that's how we make our living." I didn't get real warm and fuzzy feelings from this guy at all. And I totally understood since I was introducing a product that would eliminate a lot of his business.

The Clarity also will ace federal safety standards, start in temperatures as low as 22 degrees below zero and survive trips out to Las Vegas (high heat). Refueling is ludicrous as it requires that you have a big and heavy natural gas powered home unit, which, as it runs on natural gas, seems to defeat the whole purpose or that you live near Santa Monica, Torrance or Irvine. For now. However, the per-tank range is 270 miles. The Clarity will be coming to a Honda dealer near you in Summer 2008 (provided that you live in or near one of those three cities), Honda will be happy to lease you a Clarity for "just" $600 a month. Japanese automaker Honda Motor Co. has recently denied rumors alleging that it will buy Harley-Davidson Inc., which caused the US motorcycle maker's share to rise in New York last Friday. But just in case Honda and Harley do combine, their union would be able to control 65 percent of the US motorcycle market while its next leading competitor Yamaha will be left with only 16 percent. Such type of stronghold on the motorcycle market would definitely not please the Federal Trade Commission. Honda through its spokeswoman Yoshido has extended their stand on the issue. According to Honda spokeswoman Makiko Yoshida in Tokyo last Monday, "There's absolutely no truth to it." Amidst doubts from analyst and market participants, Harley-Davidson shares and options were able to increase with 58,535 options last Friday which is fourteen times more than the daily average that is basing from the figures gathered by market research firm Track Data. RBC Capital Market Analyst, Edward Aaron in an interview with Forbes.com last Friday said, "I'd be surprised if there was a Honda and Harley-Davidson combination, basically for regulatory and cultural reasons." He also added, "Harley is an iconic, American brand. I don't think it would be a great fit if they were under the ownership of a larger Japanese corporation." Aaron further stated that it was unlikely that Harley would become the target of a buyout. He said, "Although an LBO is more plausible than a merger with Honda, the math behind such a transaction is not highly compelling." And besides Harley is already a well operated business with a high margin profile and it's not a good business sense for an LBO investor to shell out a significant premium and be able to generate a fitting return. Harley's share gained as much as 6.4 percent before closing last Friday's session by $2.43 or about 4 percent at $62.55 on the New York Stock Exchange. On the other hand, the shares of Honda, the world's biggest motorcycle maker and producer of high quality Honda exhaust system have gained very little increase in Tokyo with only 0.5 percent last Monday at 4,420 yen. Ford Motor Company's Volvo Cars division is poised to introduce a brand new concept model at the upcoming 2007 International Motor Show (Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung, IAA) in Frankfurt. The Swedish automaker will present the ReCharge Concept, a new plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV).The Volvo ReCharge Concept will be equipped with individual electric wheel motors and batteries that can be recharged through electrical outlets. The ReCharge Concept will be installed in a Volvo C30 and will make its debut in front of the European crowd at IAA Frankfurt."A certain proportion of electrical vehicles will be necessary to meet the CO2 emission demands of the future. Since the Volvo ReCharge Concept combines an excellent battery range with a backup combustion engine, it is a very interesting concept." says Magnus Jonsson, Senior Vice President Research and Development at Volvo Cars."This plug-in hybrid car, when used as intended, should have about 66 percent lower emissions of carbon dioxide compared with the best hybrid cars available on the market today. Emissions may be even lower if most of the electricity in intended markets comes from CO2-friendly sources such as biogas, hydropower and nuclear power. The only requirement is that the car owner has access to electrical outlets at convenient places, such as at home or at the workplace. A full recharge takes 3 hours. However, even a one-hour quick charge should provide enough charge to drive about 50 kilometres." he added.Volvo engineers developed the ReCharge Concept at the Volvo Monitoring and Concept Center (VMCC) in Camarillo, California. This latest powertrain from the Swedish automaker combines the several technical innovations found today. The ReCharge Concept is equipped with a battery pack made of lithium-polymer that features an impressive longevity. The Swedish automaker will present the ReCharge Concept, a new plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV).The Volvo ReCharge Concept will be equipped with individual electric wheel motors and batteries that can be recharged through electrical outlets. The ReCharge Concept will be installed in a Volvo C30 and will make its debut in front of the European crowd at IAA Frankfurt."A certain proportion of electrical vehicles will be necessary to meet the CO2 emission demands of the future. Since the Volvo ReCharge Concept combines an excellent battery range with a backup combustion engine, it is a very interesting concept." says Magnus Jonsson, Senior Vice President Research and Development at Volvo Cars."This plug-in hybrid car, when used as intended, should have about 66 percent lower emissions of carbon dioxide compared with the best hybrid cars available on the market today. Emissions may be even lower if most of the electricity in intended markets comes from CO2-friendly sources such as biogas, hydropower and nuclear power. The only requirement is that the car owner has access to electrical outlets at convenient places, such as at home or at the workplace. A full recharge takes 3 hours.
